The setup

UFC 245 in December 2019 was the featherweight title bout between Max Holloway (3-defense champion) and Alexander Volkanovski. Holloway's reign was the most-decorated post-Aldo featherweight stretch — his 13-fight UFC win streak included finishes of Aldo (twice), Brian Ortega, Frankie Edgar, and the broader featherweight contender pool.

Volkanovski was a 6-0 UFC undefeated contender with a wrestling-and-kickboxing hybrid style. The pre-fight expectation: Holloway's volume-striking dominance vs Volkanovski's compact-power game plan.

The fight

Round 1: Volkanovski landed multiple low calf kicks that started compromising Holloway's lead leg early. Holloway controlled distance with his jab but couldn't impose the volume-striking pace that had defined his previous title defenses.

Round 2: The calf-kick attack continued. Volkanovski's lateral movement frustrated Holloway's straight-line attacks. Volkanovski's hand striking landed cleaner counter shots than Holloway's combinations.

Round 3: Holloway's lead-leg damage was visibly affecting his pivots and stance. Volkanovski's striking dominance widened.

Round 4: Volkanovski's takedowns started landing as Holloway's leg compromised his sprawl. Two successful takedowns plus continued striking.

Round 5: The championship round produced no clear comeback for Holloway. Volkanovski controlled the round with continued striking and one additional takedown.

The decision: unanimous (50-45, 49-46, 49-46) for Volkanovski.

The technical pattern

The bout demonstrated:

  • Calf-kick attack as cumulative damage: the modern MMA standard for compromising a striker's mobility.
  • Volkanovski's compact-power timing: his counter-striking against Holloway's volume edged the cards.
  • The wrestling threat: even when not landing takedowns, the threat of takedowns kept Holloway from committing to long-range combinations.

The aftermath

The result:

  • Volkanovski became UFC featherweight champion: the start of his 5-defense reign.
  • Holloway's era effectively ended: although he continued at championship level (including the UFC 300 BMF title win), his featherweight title reign was over.

The Volkanovski reign continued through:

  • UFC 251 (July 2020): Volkanovski split-decision win over Holloway in the rematch — controversial result.
  • UFC 266 (September 2021): Volkanovski UD over Brian Ortega.
  • UFC 273 (April 2022): Volkanovski TKO over Chan Sung Jung.
  • UFC 276 (July 2022): Volkanovski UD over Holloway in the trilogy bout.
  • UFC 290 (July 2023): Volkanovski TKO over Yair Rodriguez.

The reign ended at UFC 298 (February 2024) when Ilia Topuria KO'd Volkanovski to win the title.

The trilogy significance

The Holloway-Volkanovski trilogy is the most-discussed featherweight rivalry in modern MMA history. The three bouts:

  • UFC 245 (December 2019): Volkanovski UD 50-45, 49-46, 49-46.
  • UFC 251 (July 2020): Volkanovski split decision 48-47 × 2 for Volk, 47-48 for Holloway. Controversial.
  • UFC 276 (July 2022): Volkanovski UD 50-45 × 3.

Volkanovski won all three, but the second bout's controversy and the Holloway career's overall dominance (he is widely regarded as a top-3 all-time featherweight) keep the rivalry's historical assessment active.

The UFC 245 bout is the title-changing finish and the technical foundation of the Volkanovski era.
