Setup
UFC 306 at the Sphere in Las Vegas — the first MMA event at the immersive venue. Sean O'Malley entered as the bantamweight champion after his 2nd-round KO of Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292. Merab Dvalishvili, the Georgian-born SBG New York wrestler, entered 17-4 with a 10-fight win streak that had been overlooked for title shots in favor of higher-profile contenders.
The pre-fight context was unique: Dvalishvili was Sterling's training partner and had publicly stated he would not fight Sterling. With Sterling no longer the champion, the matchup made sense for the first time.
The fight
Round 1: Dvalishvili closed distance and shot for the takedown 30 seconds in. O'Malley defended the initial entry but Dvalishvili chained to a single-leg and finished. The remainder of round 1 was Dvalishvili's top-position pressure and ground control.
Rounds 2-5: The pattern repeated. Dvalishvili attempted 12+ takedowns across the fight, landing 6+, and accumulating roughly 14 minutes of control time. O'Malley's striking, which had been the championship-defining weapon, was neutralized by the constant wrestling pressure. O'Malley landed clean shots during scrambles but could not establish distance long enough to build offense.
Decision: Dvalishvili won by unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46).
What changed
The fight settled multiple questions:
- Dvalishvili's wrestling pace was elite at championship rounds: 12 takedown attempts across 5 rounds, with the pace not visibly slowing
- O'Malley's TDD was below championship level: he could not stop the entries, and his ground recovery was limited
- The Dvalishvili championship pedigree was real: the 10-fight win streak had been over-discounted because of marketability factors
Significance
UFC 306 was the first MMA event at the Sphere — a venue designed for immersive concert experiences. The production design integrated cage entrance theatrics with the 360-degree screen environment. The event also marked the era of more "experience-driven" UFC venues alongside traditional arenas.
Athletically, the fight was a clean era-handoff at bantamweight. Dvalishvili became the first Georgian UFC champion. O'Malley's loss was the most-decisive title-change at BW since Dominick Cruz's 2010s reign.
Dvalishvili defended the title at UFC 311 (January 2025) against Umar Nurmagomedov — Khabib's cousin — in another wrestling-dominant decision win.
